pDJ Anciet spins his electronic turntables as he mixes an eclectic mix of house and rarities at the first exclusive Damas Social Club party at the Fardoos Hotel in Damascus yesterday. Having been asked to do some promo shots, I tried to do my best given the challenging light (little or no light, just one small disco ball), the fact that I have never done any serious attempt at party photography---all while trying to down a beer or three between photo stunts and hitting the dancefloor. br /
br /
The party was success, although the crew had underestimated the viral marketing abilities of our french DJ friend; even though the crowd was limited by those who knew the correct password, the bar was out of proper beer within two hours, and the single bartender certainly earned his money through pure perseverance. I got my New Order fix from Blue Monday and a couple of other classics, and stuffed myself on chicken fahitas at the afterparty.br /

Photowise, this mediocre shot was the best of the bunch; low light and lots of dancefloor movement -- I'll hopefully get another chance in two weeks time.br /

Sidenote: This is the first shot I have taken using off-camera flash that actually improved the image -- one strobe at camera left on 1/4 power, with blue gel./p

Sah al Naum has been used as location for several Syrian TV dramas, and was converted to a Bamp;B just seven months ago; it is already become very popular due to the lovely staff and excellent service (and low prices - Damascus is not exactly overflowing with mid-range places to stay).br /

Playing with my new strobes amp; remote triggers, I have still to get out the door today, this house is too packed with photo op goodness---the result was 300 shots before lunch.br /

I've had less cozy living rooms than this...br /

One of the common rooms in my current home; the lovely a href=http://www.sahalnaum.com/ rel=nofollowSah al Naum/a hotel in Damascus, Syria. They call themselves a Bed amp; Breakfast, which I can only attribute to the modesty of the owner...br /
br /
Feeling like a traveler of ye olden days, I have taken up residence here for the next weeks, planning to have this as a base camp as I explore the wonderous country that is Syria. Full of history, just the Old City offers days upon days of photographic explorations.br /
br /
Much, much more to come in the following days and weeks.br /

(please try to ignore the ugly halo around the lamp - I botched a Photoshop layer mask completely trying to edit in a touch of lampshade behind all the light... I'll get better, I promise)br /
